I grew up in the Bronx I’m a person of color and the N word with the “a” ending was used on a daily basis between latinos, black people, and yes, asians. Personally, I’ve never used it or felt the need to. It never slipped out. So why was the other version easy for Nicole Curtis to just blurt out?
